2025 Annual Midwest Optimization Meeting Presenters

Prof. Boris Mordukhovich – Wayne State University

Distinguished University Professor at Wayne State University, Boris S. Mordukhovich is a pioneering figure in variational analysis and generalized differentiation. He has authored over 500 publications and several influential monographs, including the two-volume Variational Analysis and Generalized Differentiation (2006), Variational Analysis and Applications (2018), and Convex Analysis and Beyond (2022). His groundbreaking contributions underpin modern nonsmooth, nonconvex optimization, impacting fields from control theory to economics and engineering. Prof. Mordukhovich is recognized as a SIAM and AMS Fellow, and has received multiple international honorary doctorates. Prof. Mordukhovich is in the list of Highly Cited Researchers in Mathematics. He currently serves as Principal Investigator on major research programs in variational analysis supported by the U.S. NSF and the Australian Research Council.  In 2025, he was awarded the INFORMS Lanchester Prize for his recent book Second-Order Variational Analysis in Optimization, Variational Stability, and Control. Prof. R. Tyrrell Rockafellar – University of Washington

Ralph Tyrrell Rockafellar is internationally recognized as one of the foremost authorities in optimization theory, as well as in related areas of analysis and combinatorics. He earned his undergraduate and doctoral degrees in mathematics from Harvard University, and has spent much of his distinguished career at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he now serves as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. Prof. Rockafellar’s scholarly contributions include more than 240 publications, among them the landmark book Convex Analysis, one of the most highly cited works in mathematical literature. Together with Roger Wets, he authored Variational Analysis, a seminal text that earned them the 1997 Frederick W. Lanchester Prize from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). In 1999, INFORMS further recognized his transformative influence on optimization methodology by awarding him the prestigious John von Neumann Theory Prize. His many honors also include the George B. Dantzig Prize, underscoring his lasting impact on mathematical optimization.  Visit his personal website here or his department website here.

Prof. Henry Wolkowicz – University of Waterloo

Henry Wolkowicz is a Professor in the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization at the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, where he has served since 1986. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from McGill University in 1978. A leading figure in optimization and operations research, Prof. Wolkowicz has authored over 160 research papers and edited several influential books in these fields. He is a SIAM Fellow, a former Chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Optimization, and has served on the Boards of both SIAM and the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS).  Visit his personal website here or his department website here.

Prof. Vera Zeidan – Michigan State University

Prof. Vera Michel Zeidan is a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Michigan State University, where she has been a faculty member for over three decades. A leading scholar in optimal control and variational analysis, her research spans optimal control theory, nonsmooth analysis, variational methods, time scales in variational problems, sweeping processes, and applied analysis. Prof. Zeidan has authored more than 100 publications in top-tier international journals, contributing substantially to the advancement of these fields.  Visit her personal website here or her department website here.
